Additional information
On 30 August 1944, at 3:55 pm, U482 fired two torpedoes at a group of five ships around 50 miles (80km) north of Londonderry, Northern Ireland, in North Atlantic. The Jacksonville was hit and burst into flames. She broke in two. A few men were able to jump into the burning sea. An armed guard and a fireman were rescued by the American destroyer escort USS Poole (DE-151). The two sections that remained afloat were sunk using depth charges and gunfire, position 55°30'N/07°30'W. The attack cost the lives of 9 officers, 40 crew and 31 gunners.
