On 18 July 1940, the Gyda was sailing unescorted towards Bathurst, New Brunswick, when she was torpedoed at 4:41 pm by U-58 to the north-west of Ireland. She sank in less than a minute with the captain and 10 crew members in position 55°50'N/09°00'W. The nine survivors were picked up by the SS Ville d'Arlon, which landed them in New York on 26 July.
