On 7 January 1942, the Caledonian Monarch drifted away from the SC-63 convoy heading for Loch Ewe, Scotland, due to a violent storm, in position 54°00'N/42°22'W. She was then reported missing on the 14th. On 22 January, U-588 reported torpedoing a ship about 30 miles (48 km) north-northwest of the Isle of Lewis in the Hebrides, Scotland. At 4:46 am, the ship sank in position 58°39'N/07°36'W. The 48 crew members were never seen again. The date given for Smith's death is arbitrary.
