Son of William A. and Edith Marian Cowan, of Guelph, Ontario. Lieutenant William Cowan was a member of the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps, died while serving with the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) as a CANLOAN Officer.

Brother of Captain David Lacy Cowan, who died on October 2, 1944, while serving with the Royal Canadian Engineers.
