James Edwin Blaney signed an Attestation Paper for the Canadian Grenadier Guards Overseas Battalion (87th Battalion) in Montreal on November 23, 1915. He signed a second Attestation Paper, for the Second Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment, in Ottawa on September 24, 1918, indicating that he had served with the 87th Battalion CEF for 2 and a half years. The medical examination at that time indicated that he had "Scars on abdomen" and "Shrapnel Scars on body". He was declared "unfit" for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. During the Second World War, he joined the Veterans Guard of Canada, and was a member of that unit at the time of his death on April 8, 1944.<P> Attestation Paper (Source Library and Archives Canada. James Edwin Blaney's parents are buried next to him in the Dale Cemetery in Cumberland, Ontario. His mother lived to see him serve in both World Wars, and, sadly, to mourn his death. -
