Captain Charles Édouard Lafond

Baptized Joseph Charles Édouard Lafond. Son of Benoit Lafond and Ernestine Trudel, of Grantham, Drummond, Québec. Husband of Yvette Cloutier, of Sillery, Québec. Father of Guy and René Lafond.

He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment, Company D, service number 15000, of the Canadian Permanent Force from October 11, 1926, to October 10, 1929, and later in the Royal 22e Régiment, service number 48722, of the Canadian Permanent Force from December 7, 1931, to September 4, 1939. On September 5, 1939, he enlisted in the Canadian Active Service Force, service number P-48722, at the Citadel of Quebec with the Royal 22e Régiment.

He sailed for Great Britain on December 9, 1939, arriving at Greenock, Scotland, on December 18. The following day, he transferred to the West Nova Scotia Regiment, where he served until September 29, 1941, when he returned to the Royal 22e Régiment. During this period, he qualified as a physical training and small arms instructor. He was promoted to lieutenant, service number ZP-1665, on September 27, 1941.

He returned to Canada from August 29, 1943, to March 22, 1944, before sailing back to Great Britain on April 8, 1944. Still serving as an instructor, he returned to Canada on June 20, 1945. He continued to serve at various locations across the country until he was hospitalized at Camp Borden, Ontario, on December 27, 1946.

After being transferred to Christie Street Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, on February 4, 1947, he died there at 8:46 a.m. on February 8, 1947, from a severe pulmonary embolism and thrombosis of the right leg. He was buried in Quebec City on February 12, 1947.

He never saw combat.
