Son of Elizabeth (née Bushman) and William Tait Batchen of Rouleau, Saskatchewan. William Tait Batchen was born in Peebles, Scotland and married Elizabeth in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He started a law practice. They had three children, a daughter, Frances who become a concert pianist in New York, Ronald and his brother, Sergeant Alexander George Batchen, died on September 12, 1941 at age 20, while serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was the eldest of the children.
