She was en route from Quebec City, Quebec, Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Bristol, England, with convoy SC-3 when on 15 September 1940, at 12:16 p.m., she was torpedoed by U-99 about 44 miles (71 km) west-northwest of Rockall, west of Scotland, in the North Atlantic, position 57°42'N/15°02'W. Refusing to sink, the wreck had to be scuttled by HMS Amazon (D39) of the Royal Navy. The attack caused the death of the captain and six crew members. The thirteen survivors were rescued by the Amazon and the Royal Canadian Navy's HMCS St-Laurent (H83), which landed them in Greenock, Scotland.
