Engine Room Artificer 3rd Class JOHN ALVAH COLE was one of four members of the crew of HMCS Matane who were killed when the frigate was struck by a glider bomb, launched by a Dornier 217, in the Bay of Biscay, South of Brest Peninsula on July 20, 1944. Details apparently were not released to the press until May 29, 1945.
