Son of David Addington Chapman and Jessie Maud Haynes of Kelowna, British Columbia. Husband of Eldith Marian Leslie Cranswell of Vancouver. Father of Philipia H. Chapman.

Brother of a Royal Canadian Air Force wireless radio operator and gunner and a sister, Joyce Chapman, Canadian Army Sister Nurse. They survived the war.

He was a trooper with the British Columbia Dragoons, B Squadron, Kelowna, British Columbia, from July 17, 1940 to February 24, 1941.

He served only in Canada and died accidentally.
