On March 26, 1942, convoy PQ-13 was scattered due to very strong winds, while on route to Murmansk, USSR, from Boston, Massachusetts, USA. On March 28, at 12:20 p.m., the Raceland was attacked by a German Ju-88 aircraft and sank at 8:00 p.m. about 110 miles (177 km) north of North Cape, Norway, position 72°40'N/20°20'E. Of the 47 sailors on board, 35 died. The remaining 12 were taken prisoner in Tromso, Norway, after having drifted until April 2. They were interned in Bremen, Germany until May 1945.
