Son of Douglas Patterson and Jessie Glenora Fields of Canning, Nova Scotia. Brother of Arthur, Maynard, Lewis, Mary, Ellen, Jane and Gracie. Husband of Eileen Ethel (nee Murphy) Fields and father of Wendall, Frederick, Tina, Steven and Tammy of Petawawa, Ontario. A Commemorative Ceremony was held at Wegner Point on 11 May 2008 to honour the seven fallen paratroopers who drowned in 1968 during a para drop exercise at CFB Petawawa. Close to 100 guests, most in uniform, attended the Ceremony gathered around the Memorial Cairn. Several family members of the deceased were present for the Ceremony.
