S/Sgt. Rothwell was born in Arden, Manitoba. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII. S/Sgt. Rothwell had extensive experience as a bush pilot and had been flying RCMP aircraft for 12 years. He was the senior pilot of the RCMP Air Division. He died in an airplane accident while in the performance of duty along the East Shore of Skaha Lake, British Columbia. This accident was the RCMP’s first fatal crash since they began flying their own planes in 1937. There is a plaque in the RCMP chapel at Depot in memory of the members who perished in this accident. S/Sgt. Rothwell had a wife Helen, and a son.
