Inspector Fitzgerald served with the militia in Halifax until the age of 19 years and then enlisted as a Constable in the NWMP. He was a seasoned outdoorsman. He was promoted to Corporal in 1899, to Sergeant upon his return from the Boer War in 1902, and to Inspector on December 1, 1909. Inspector Fitzgerald was the last to die from starvation, exposure and exhaustion while on the MacPherson Dawson patrol. He was not married and had a daughter Annie.
