Prior to joining the NWMP, Sergeant Montgomery was a school teacher. He was engaged at Fort Walsh and was a first class horseman. He died from injuries sustained when thrown off his horse while on parade at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He was riding his favorite horse, one he had ridden the past six years. Sergeant Montgomery received the North West Canada Medal (1885). He is buried in St. Mary’s churchyard, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
