Cochrane Cenotaph was unveiled on 14 October 1995 through the efforts of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 15 and citizens of Cochrane. It was dedicated to the local war dead of the First and Second World Wars. Later inscriptions were added to honour the United Nations and Korean War. Then with the 2017 refurbishment, these latter inscriptions were changed to Korean War, peacekeepers and Afghanistan.

Cochrane Legion member Todd Puzey officially kicked off his vision in early 2017 to revitalize Cenotaph Park with the help of Legion members and project organizers first vice-president Dave Usherwood and Sergeant-at-Arms Steve Merritt.

The existing cenotaph was re-engineered and flawlessly reconfigured by Terry Norman, of OnGrowing Works, with matching granite from Quebec to hold the 800 lb. statue. The bronze statue is a seven-foot portrayal of a First World War soldier in a memorial stance created by renowned bronze sculptor Don Begg of Studio West Bronze Foundry Ltd.

It was rededicated on October 26, 2017. Lieutenant Governor Lois Mitchell, aided by Cochrane Mayor Jeff Genung, unveiled the bronze that stands high on a revitalized granite below, complemented by new flag stands on either side.

The two sides of the marble monument list all veterans from the Maskwacis Cree Four Nations who served alongside their Nation and Conflict served.

Chiefs and council members, veterans and elders of the four Cree nations of Maskwacis unveiled the monument on Remembrance Day 2014. The speeches made during the ceremony paid tribute to the patience and perseverance in efforts that took years to bring the project for the veterans memorial to a successful conclusion. In the course of the ceremonies, the names of veterans of the Maskwacis bands were read and a special tribute was paid to Wilton Littlechild, honourary chief of the Maskwacis Cree. Chief of Ermineskin Cree nation Randy Ermineskin laid a wreath at the newly unveiled cenotaph.

A memorial plaque was struck at a cost of 255.00 dollars which contains the names of Ponoka and area people who gave their lives in World War I. It was originally placed on the outside wall of the Elks Memorial Hall in August 1928, where it remained for over thirty years. After that time it was removed and when the Cenotaph was completed and the grounds landscaped in 1961 this plaque was placed near the Panoka Cenotaph where it remains at this present time.

The Panoka and District Cenotaph was erected around 1960, in memory of our fallen comrades who served in World War I, World War II and Korea. A newly constructed Cairn shaped Cenotaph constructed of local field stone was unveiled in June of 1961, in honour of our fallen comrades who served in WWI, WWII and Korea. The total cost to Ponoka Branch 66 was 1156.50 dollars, which included landscaping. Volunteers of the branch picked and hauled the field stone. Events held at the Cenotaph include Drumhead Services and the annual Remembrance Wreath Service. For over thirty years upkeep and maintenance of the grounds was performed by legion members but in recent years the Town of Ponoka has taken over this task. The Legion Branch recently repaired and repainted the stonework at a cost of 900.00 dollars. The Canadian flag flies at the rear of the Cenotaph and is always kept in good repair.

Members of the Ponoka Legion celebrated Saturday, Oct. 3 2015 new improvements to their cenotaph that recognizes fallen Ponoka veterans. new rail, cement work and a ramp for members with wheelchairs.
