The Royal Canadian Barons Legion, Branch No. 160 had long wished to erect a monument. The Village of Barons agreed to a possible location in the village park. A local farmer, Mr. Alan Fraser reported there was a huge rock in his field which might be suitable for such a purpose. A work party of Legion people, with the aid of machinery donated by a local firm, S and A Ditching, constructed an earthen raised area in the corner of the park. The huge rock was carried by heavy machinery and placed on a cement base atop the earthen mound. Cement steps are placed to provide a walkway to the monument. A bronze plaque commemorating the veterans of the First and Second World Wars and Korea was affixed to the rock.

This mountain was named in 1918 in honour of Colonel Frederick Etherington, C.M.G. Etherington was born in Gananoque and was a Queen’s medical student from 1898-1902. In 1907 he was appointed as professor of anatomy (the first one in Canada) at Queens University. In 1911 he became the first full-time surgeon in Kingston. He was very active in prison reform and made many recommendations on how the living conditions of prisoners should be improved. The mountain was named for his wartime contribution when he organized and commanded the No. 5 Stationary Hospital in Egypt, which was staffed by recruits from Queens’ faculty and students. In 1916 the hospital was transferred to France and became the 7th Canadian Hospital. In 1923 Etherington became Dean of Medicine at Queens. During this time he also served as president of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons and of the Medical Council of Canada.
