The North Vancouver Cenotaph, located in Victoria Park, was constructed in 1923 in memory of the citizens of the City and the District of North Vancouver who gave their lives during the First World War. The monument was later rededicated to commemorate the fallen of the Boer War, the Second World War, the Korean War and various peacekeeping missions around the world. The Cenotaph was designed by Blackadder and MacKay, Architects, and erected by the British Columbia Monumental Works of Vancouver. (Henry Blackadder was a resident of North Vancouver and served during the First World War.) The 1995 Cenotaph Enhancement Project upgraded the surrounding area of Victoria Park with new memorial markers, a commemorative lawn, extended walkways, lighting, a drinking fountain, floral plantings and additional benches.

This mural was sponsored and spearheaded in 2018 by Communities in Bloom in partnership with the Eagle Valley Arts Council, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 99, District of Sicamous and local businesses. The western wall of the Legion was crumbling so Communities in Bloom supplied materials to strap the wall and add crezone board as a base for the mural. The Legion repaired the wall, created a committee of both young and older Veterans to create the subject matter of the mural, and made a donation supporting the Eagle Valley Arts Council, whose members painted the mural.

The painters included Kim Hyde, Karen Oliver, Cindy Mackrell, Dianna Bowles, Marg Pettitt, Carol Schlosar, Sue Miller, Sally Handley, and one other woman who was visiting. The paint was supplied by a local business. Once the mural was completed, it was coated with an anti-graffiti clear coat. The mural is a tribute to the past and present members of the Canadian Armed Forces, featuring a depiction of the Vimy Ridge Memorial, which serves as a symbol of the birth of the Canadian Armed Forces. It also depicts a Canadian flag with a silhouette of a soldier kneeling before a grave, which honours those who did not return home. The mural also features the badge of the Canadian Armed Forces, as well as several poppies.

Marine Peace Park, was designated as Salmon Arm's "Peace Park" as part of Canada's 125th Birthday in 1992. The signature piece of the marine park is the 135 metre (440 feet) long wooden pier sitting on stilts.

"Peace Parks Across Canada" was conceived and organized by the International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT) in collaboration with "CANADA 125" and the National Capital Commission. As Canada celebrated its 125th Birthday, some 400 cities and towns across Canada dedicated a Park to Peace – with most parks dedicated at Noon local time, October 8th, as the National Peacekeeping Monument was being unveiled in Ottawa. The members of the winning design team included Cornelia H. Oberlander, landscape architect. Supporters included the Federation of Canadian Mayors and Municipalities, Canada Parks and Recreation Association, the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, Heritage Canada, World Wildlife Fund Canada, Friends of the Earth, Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, and local Rotary Clubs all across Canada. Project sponsors included VIA Rail, Greyhound Lines Canada, Ltd., CP Hotels and Resorts, Ramada International Hotels and Resorts, Four Seasons Ltd., Meridien Hotels, Concept 3 Advertising and Programmed Communications, Ltd.

Peace Parks Across Canada" has served as the foundation in launching the "IIPT Global Peace Parks Program" on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, 2000.

At noon on October 9th, 2007 – one day after the precise 15th Anniversary of the original dedications, and as Canada continues to be a beacon of peace, Tolerance, and Understanding in a world of increasing violence and distrust, and a nation that celebrates diversity, a nation-wide re-dedication was co-ordinated.

Each of the original Peace Parks incorporated a ‘Bosco Sacro’ (Peace Grove) of 12 trees as a symbolic link with one another, and with nature - and as a symbol of hope for the future. The 12 trees were also symbolic of Canada’s 10 Provinces and two Territories. As there are now three Territories, a 13th tree was planted as part of the "Re-dedication Ceremony."

Body Content

Major Mutrie Lake is named in honour of Major Robert John Mutrie. It was named by the Government of British Columbia on May 9, 1977.

Robert John Mutrie was born in April 1883 in Wellington County, Ontario to Col. John and Margaret (Dow) Mutrie. His father had served during the Fenian Raids, had risen through the ranks to command the 30th Wellington Rifles, and had occupied various civic positions in the county. Robert John Mutrie had also served with the 30th Wellington Rifles, joining the Regiment in 1909. In 1914, while working as a realtor in the Vernon area of British Columbia, he joined the 2nd Canadian mounted Rifles (British Columbia Regiment), eventually becoming the Second-in-Command of the Regiment. The 2nd CMR, along with the Canadian Corps (now 3 divisions) was moved into the Ypres salient in March 1916, to hold the line from Hooge to St. Eloi, including Hill 62, Observatory Ridge, and Mount Sorrel. On March 27, the British exploded 6 huge mines that they had been tunneling since August 1915. This marked the beginning of the battle of the St. Eloi craters. It was near the end of this battle that Major Robert Mutrie was killed by artillery fire on April 5, 1916. He is interred at Poperinghe New Military Cemetery in Belgium.

HISTORY OF THE BRITISH COLUMBIA DRAGOONS

BETWEEN 1884 AND 1908, SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO ORGANIZE A
MILITIA CAVALRY UNIT IN THE INTERIOR OF THE PROVINCE. THE MEMORY
OF THE RIEL REBELLION WAS STILL FRESH, AND THE ALASKA BOUNDARY DISPUTE OF 1903 HIGHLIGHTEDTHE FACT THAT AN INVASION BY THE U.S.A.
WAS STILL A POSSIBILITY. IN EARLY 1908, A PETITION TO FORM A CAVALRY
UNIT WAS SUBMITTED TO MILITIA AUTHORITIES. ON 1 APRIL 1908,
PERMISSION WS GRANTED. ON 9 MAY 1908, AN ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING
WAS HELD IN VERNON, B.C., WHERE THE NAME "THE OKANAGAN MOUNTED
RIFLES" WAS ANNOUNCED AND THAT MAJOR H.A. PERRY WOULD ASSUME
COMMAND. THE SQUADRON HELD ITS FIRST MOUNTED PARADE ON 10
OCTOBER 1908. ALTHOUGH MOST MEN HAD UNIFORMS AND RIFLES, THEY HAD
TO PROVIDE THIER OWN MOUNTS AND SADDLES. ON 12 JUNE 1909, THE
SQUADRON ESTABLISHED THE FIRST CAVALRY CAMP ON THE SHORE OF
OKANAGAN LAKE AT WHAT IS NOW KINSMEN PARK NEAR VERNON, B.C. IN
THE NEXT TWO YEARS, SQUADRONS WERE ESTABLISHED IN COLDSTREAM,
LUMBY, KELOWNA, AND ARMSTRONG. ON 1 APRIL 1911, ALL WERE GROUPED
INTO A SINGLE REGIMENT, "THE 1ST B.C. HORSE". FIVE MONTS LATER IT
BECAME "THE 30TH B.C. HORSE", WITH HEADQUARTERS IN VERNON. THE
REGIMENT QUICKLY STTLED IN TO A TRANINING PATTERN IN THE SUMMER,
AND ORGANIZED SOCIAL EVENTS IN THE WINTER. ON 3 DECEMBER 1913 THE
NEW VERNON ARMOURY OPENED AT A COST OF $18,000.00. THE RIGIMENT
HAD A PERMANENT HOME AND TOTALLY INTEGRATED INTO THE COMMUNITY.

CANADA ENTERED WW1, 4 AUGUST 1914. BY 20 AUGUST THE REGIMENT WAS
CONCENTRATED IN VERNON READY TO GO TO WAR. ON 7 NOVEMBER
AUTHORITY WAS GIVEN TO ORGANIZE "THE 2ND CANADIAN MOUNTED RIFLES"
AND MOST MEMBERS OF "THE B.C. HORSE" JOINED THIS REGIMENT. AFTER
INTENSIVE TRAINING IN VICTORIA, B.C., THEY WERE SHIPPED OVERSEAS 4
JUNE 1915. AFTER FURTHER TRAINNG IN SHORNCLIFFE, ENGLAND, THEY
EMBARKED ON 4 OCTOBER FOR ACTIVE DUTY IN FRANCE. THE REGIMENT
FOGHT MAJOR BATTLES WITH THE CANADIAN CORPS IN FRANCE AND
FLANDERS, YPRES, THE SOMMES, VIMY RIDGE AND PASSCHENDAELE - THESE,
AND OTHER BATTLE HONORS WERE EMBLAZED UPON THEIR GUIDON MARKING
A SILENT TRIBUTE TO THE SACRIFICES MADE IN WW1. THE 2ND CMRs
RETURNED FROM OVERSEAS SERVICE AND OFFICIALLY DISBANDED ON 9 APRIL
1919.

THE REGIMENT AGAIN GEGAN TRAINING AS A MILITIA UNIT, AND ON 15
MARCH 1920, THE REMNANTS OF THE "OLD" B.C. HORSE PLUS VETERANS OF
THE 2ND AND THE 11TH CMRs WERE REORGANIZED INTO THE "BRITISH
COLUMBIA MOUNTED RIFLES". DUE TO GENERAL CONCERNS THAT THE TERM
"MOUNTED RIFLES" EQUALLED INFANTRY, THE REGIMENT BECAME "THE
BRITISH COLUMBIA DRAGOONS"

ON THE OUTBREAK OF WWII, THE DRAGOONS AGAIN OFFERED THEIR
SERVICES, SERVING FIRST AS MOTORCYCLE, AND THEN ULTIMATELY AS AN
ARMOURED UNIT. ON 24 MAY 1944, THE B.C.Ds WENT INTO ACTION IN ITALY.
DURING THE LIRI VALLEY OPERATION THE REGIMENT CARRIED OUT A MAJOR
ROLE IN BREAKING OUT OF THE HITLER LINE AND EXPLOITING NORTHWARD.
BREAKING THROUGH THE GOTHIC LINE FORTHER NORTH, IT FOUGHT
MAGNIFICE TLY IN SPITE OF HEAVY CASUALTIES IN MEN AND TANKS. IN
LATER BATTLES FORM CORIANO RIDGE TO THE CAMACCHIO LAGOON, AND
DELFZIJL, THE B.C.Ds CARRIED OUT THE TASKS ASSIGNED TO THEM WITH
SKILL AND DARING, ADDING MORE BATTLE HONORS TO THEIR GUIDON WHEN
WW11 ENDED ON 5 MAY 1945. THE REGIMENT, AFTER A SHORT STAY IN
VEENDAM, HOLLAND, RETURNED HOME ON 19 JANUARY 1946 AND
DEMOBILIZED.

"THE - BRITISH COLUMBIA DRAGOONS" WERE AGAIN MOBILIZED ON 1 APRIL
1946 AND CONTINUES SERVING AS A MILITIA UNIT TODAY.
