The Merchant Mariners memorial honours those who served and in particular those who were lost in war service. The bronze memorial was designed by Summit Studios and unveiled May 1, 2016 on the Sydney waterfront.
The peacekeeping monument on the Sidney waterfront recognizes 50 peacekeeping missions since 1956. In particular it remembers Canadian Forces losses, including four from Cape Breton. The monument designed by Michelle Gardiner includes a blue beret, blue helmet blue ball cap and a Canadian flag. The monument was unveiled on August 9, 2016.
The Victoria County Memorial Hospital was opened in 1949 as a 23-bed, Canadian Red Cross-operated facility. In 1995, a new hospital was opened, built with local support and fundraising.
This memorial hospital is dedicated to Veterans of the First & Second World War from Baddeck Co., Nova Scotia.
Peacekeepers Way
This highway is 30 kilometres long and runs from an interchange of Highway 105 in Sydney Mines to Trunk 4 (Grand Lake Road) in Sydney. Highway 125 was officially designated Peacekeepers Way on August 18, 2008, by Premier Rodney MacDonald, as a reminder of the dedication and sacrifice of peacekeepers who have contributed to missions around the world. This designation is in recognition of Canadian Forces personnel and police from Nova Scotia who have contributed to peace and security around the world.
Nova Scotians have participated in peacekeeping operations from the Middle East to Central America, from Cyprus to Bosnia and Herzegovina. John Horvath of Howie Centre, the eastern regional director of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping, said his project to rename Highway 125 was three years in the making. Horvath served two one-year terms with the United Nations in the Gaza Strip in 1958 and again in 1961.
