The Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital was built in 1949 to commemorate those men and women from the local area who served and those who died in the war. The name was transferred to a new hospital built in 1976 and it became the Doctor Duncan MacMillan Nursing Home.

Shortly after the Second World War, a beach stone cairn was erected in front of the Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital in Sheet Harbour. The monument was removed and a new one erected. A portion of the original monument was transferred to a flower garden at the Legion, so that only the stone base remains.
