It is doubtful if any community of its size in Canada acquitted itself more nobly in war work than did Shubenacadie, which gave its youth and money without stint and, at the end of the great conflict, did fitting honour to its 19 gallant dead by erecting a handsome granite and bronze monument, one of the best in the province. The call for troops was answered quickly. In all, about 80 young men and three nurses went overseas. Every appeal for money for war purposes received enthusiastic support. When the great struggle was over and on the evening before the day set apart as National Peace Day, in July 1919, a great gathering was held at the exhibition grounds in the main building. With appropriate ceremony sixty heroic men and three brave nurses were each presented with a handsome gold watch as a slight token of the community's appreciation. This presentation is believed to have had no counterpart in all Canada. Following the ceremony, all sat down to a turkey supper, following which came an enjoyable dance. At sharp midnight, fireworks were set off and an enormous bonfire was lighted. Shubenacadie believes it was the first place in Canada to celebrate National Peace Day. It, apparently, stole a march on the rest of the country. Later, the movement to erect a monument to the 19 gallant dead was started. The chairman of the committee having the matter in hand was Watson Smith and the secretary-treasurer was W.D. Bowers, manager of the Royal Bank. The monument cost about $5,000. It was unveiled the summer of 1921 before an immense crowd. The granite base is surmounted by a life-size Canadian soldier in bronze, carrying a lighted torch. The monument stands on the railway side of the main street, near the depot, on land 30 X 50 feet granted by the C.N.R. for the purpose. It is planned to build a low concrete wall about this land next year and put up concrete steps from the street. In the matter of the war memorial, Shubenacadie has set a shining example to many larger communities. - From local Shubenacadie paper, dated Thursday, November 16, 1921.

The Uniacke and District Memorial was erected November 6th, 1976 in memory of the Men of Uniacke and District who gave their lives for their country. The memorial was dedicated on November 11th 1976. The existing war monument in Mount Uniacke originated when the Uniacke Ratepayers Association realized that the Community Hall with its memorial kitchen had deteriorated beyond economical repair. The idea of erecting a monument was initiated by Maynard Parker, a First World War veteran whose son, Maynard, was killed during the Second World War, and Jack MacDonnell, a Second World War veteran. A three member committee was formed to dispose of the building and to construct a monument to replace the memorial kitchen. This committee was comprised of the following: Donald William Nicoll, Maynard Parker, and James L. Paulley. After removing the old community hall, the property PID #45138120, registered in the name of "Village of Mount Uniacke", was prepared and the monument was constructed by members of the Uniacke and District Volunteer Fire Department with other volunteers. The monument was completed on November 6th, 1976. The original plaque was replaced with one bearing an additional name. The former plaque is in the Memorabilia room at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 165, Mount Uniacke, Nova Scotia.

The Cenotaph erected by 107 (Valley) Wing Royal Canadian Air Force Association (RCAFA) was dedicated on 6th April, 1986 after a year and a half of planning and construction. Each year on Battle of Britain Sunday in September, 107 (Valley) Wing RCAFA holds a Parade and Ceremony at the Cenotaph to honour those who fought and lost their lives in the Battle of Britain during the Second World War. We are assisted in this endeavour by elements from 14 Wing Greenwood, local Branches of the Royal Canadian Legion and #517 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron Greenwood. The Cenotaph is maintained by 107 (Valley) Wing members, including painting and repairs when required. It is enclosed on three sides by hedges, with two flagpoles behind the Cenotaph and several flower beds in front of it. The flowers are planted each Spring by 107 (Valley) Wing members and the beds are weeded, hedges clipped and grass mowed as required during the Summer, again by Wing members. 107 (Valley) Wing, Greenwood, Nova Scotia unveiled their new Cenotaph with a Parade and dedication ceremony. The Cenotaph is constructed of a granite stone mounted on a concrete apron, backed by an "Argus" prop supported on a 7' steel "I" beam. The inscription on the stone is in both official languages and reads: "Dedicated to all personnel who served in the R.C.A.F.A.; B.C.A.T.P.: Allied Air Forces and Canadian Armed Forces in memorial to those who gave up their lives in the cause of Aviation. We will remember them." The Cenotaph Committee, consisting of Gord Faulkner, Chairman; Ron Franklin, Vice Chairman; Jim Metlin and Tom Lupton, Art and Design; Jim Hawley and Bert Carpenter, Construction; and Cindy Bawn, Secretary, spent a year on negotiating with DND for leasing the land and design approval. A further six months was used for construction and landscaping. All work was carried out by the Committee assisted by other dedicated Wing members. All costs were covered by funds received from special Wing projects. The prop was donated by Robb Engineering, Amherst, Nova Scotia. The dedication ceremony was conducted by Lt. Col. (Ret'd) Rev Hal Cox, Wing Padre, assisted by Capt. Rev Joseph MacLean (RC) CFB Greenwood. The CFB Greenwood volunteer pipe and drum band provided the music. Wreaths were laid by Colonel PJ O'Donnell, Base Commander, CFB Greenwood on behalf of Canadian Forces and Ron Taylor, Wing President, for the RCAF Association.
