The Last Steps Memorial Arch

Nova Scotia played a role in the conduct of the War which will redound to her glory for all time”

(Nova Scotia’s Part in the Great War - M. Stuart Hunt, 1920)

Near this spot, on 20 May 1915, soldiers of the 22nd Battalion (now the Royal 22nd Regiment - Quebec), the 24th Battalion (Victoria Rifles – Montreal), and the 25th Battalion (Nova Scotia Rifles) of the Canadian Expeditionary Force left Halifax aboard His Majesty’s Transport Ship Saxonia. For hundreds of them, this would be the last time that they stepped on Canadian soil. We can only imagine the thoughts they may have had as they boarded the ship and watched the Port of Halifax disappear from view behind them.

The 25th Battalion, Nova Scotia Rifles was the first complete infantry unit raised in this province to leave Nova Scotia and, on 12 October 1916, the 85th Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders also embarked for overseas service. These were the only two Nova Scotia infantry battalions that stayed together throughout the First World War and were not broken up for reinforcements. Over the course of the War, 350,000 Canadian troops sailed from this port to an uncertain future. Of that number, 67,000 died in Belgium and France. The lives of those who returned to Canada were changed forever. 30,000 Nova Scotians volunteered for military and naval service and 3,400 didn’t come home. The Army Museum Halifax Citadel commemorates their legacy of service and sacrifice. www.armymuseumhalifax.ca

There is also an acknowledgement panel that says:

This memorial was made possible through the dedicated partnership of many community organizations. The design for the arch was created by Halifax artist, Nancy Keating, whose Great Uncle, Major A.W.P. Keating, served in the 25th Battalion, Nova Scotia Rifles. The project was led by Governor Corinne MacLellan and Curator Ken Hynes of the Army Museum Halifax Citadel

On Friday, August 26, 2016, at 11 a.m., the Last Steps Memorial Arch was unveiled on a pier behind the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. The Halifax waterfront is where thousands of Canadian men and women took their last steps as they embarked on ships to Europe during the First World War. There were around 350,000 Canadian men and women who boarded ships in Halifax to be taken overseas. About 60,000 never returned.

Corinne MacLellan  teamed up with Ken Hynes, a retired army major, who is the volunteer curator at the Army Museum Halifax Citadel to develop the memorial. MacLellan and Hynes got advice or permission or funding from Halifax Waterfront Development, ACOA, Veterans Affairs Canada, the Halifax Foundation, the maritime museum, the city, Parks Canada and others. The artist Nancy Keating, who designed the memorial victory arch and a gangway, unveiled the conceptual drawing of the memorial on May 20, 2015.

The memorial received a refit from Coastal Woodworkers and was repositioned on June 7, 2022.

The HMCS VENTURE (1954-1968) Legacy Cairn was installed on 28 August 2024 by the VENTURE (1954—1968) Legacy Committee in the Admiralty Garden at the Halifax Naval Museum. It was dedicated on 14 September 2024.

The cairn was designed by CDR Matt Durnford Royal Canadian Navy, Retired, VENTURE Class of 1965, with input from the VENTURE Legacy Committee and DeMone Monuments of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. It is constructed of granite representing strength and the coastal environment. The shape and size is reminiscent of historical monuments commemorating momentous occasions , events and individuals. The shape was designed to accommodate the crest of HMCS VENTURE at the top, with a short inscription (in both official languages) recognizing the contribution of the Naval Officers who graduated from HMCS VENTURE during the period between 1954 and 1968.

The inscription on the base elaborates on the main inscription on the cairn. The initials “BZ”: BRAVO ZULU is the combination of the BRAVO and ZULU nautical signal flags, is a Naval signal, typically conveyed by flag hoist or voice radio, meaning “WELL DONE” with regard to actions, operations or performance.

Three murals were commissioned and painted by local artist Commander Donald Cameron MacKay, R.C.N. in 1951. Mr. Mackay was the principal at the Nova Scotia College of Art and served in the Royal Canadian Navy for part of his six years as a war artist.

The murals depict the role of the servicemen during the war years. The murals are based on his sketches of Halifax dockyard scenes, the harbour, ships and local military installations. The murals are approximately 6 feet long. They were exhibited in the Halifax Memorial Library Building for many years until they were donated to the Maritime Command Museum (CFB Halifax) in 1974.

The Maritime Command Museum was established at Admiralty House to preserve the Military heritage of Canada's Maritime Forces. It is the largest Naval Museum within the system. The Museum was officially opened on March 26, 1974 by Rear Admiral D. S. Boyle.

Boer War Memorial Fountain

The figure at the top of the fountain was modeled from a photograph of a local Canadian Mounted Rifleman, Billy Pickering, a well-known athlete from Halifax who went to South Africa after his adventures in the Klondike Gold Rush. Photos of him in his uniform were sent to the Macfarlane Iron Works in Glasgow where the statue was made by Hamilton MacCarthy. He is supported by a Corinthian capital surrounded by four cranes standing amid daffodils. Surrounding the fountain stands a collection of weeping trees including Weeping European Beech ( Fagus sylvatica Pendula ), Camperdown Elms (Ulmus glabra ‘Camperdownii’) and Weeping Ash (Fraxinus excelsior ‘Pendula’).

The memorial was erected by citizens of Halifax. One of the Camperdown Elms, (Ulmus glabra ‘Camperdownii’), was donated by the family of a Canadian soldier who died during the Boer War.

The memorial was unveiled in 1903 and commemorates the service of Canadian soldiers in the South African War.

Entering St Paul's Anglican Church from the narthex to the nave, you pass through the Memorial Arch. The ninety-one names of men of the parish who died in World War One are listed by rank. Above the arch is a piece of wreckage driven into the wall of the church in the Halifax Explosion on December 6, 1917.

Rev. Dr. William J. Armitage (1860-1929) served as rector of St. Paul's Church, Halifax, from 1897-1929. He volunteered as military chaplain, ministering to the men who camped in Halifax prior to being sent overseas, and served as honorary chaplain of the 66th Regiment. Rev. Dr. Armitage's notes regard parishioners who fought in World War One, who are memorialized on the bronze memorial doors.

Starting its active service in October 2013, the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Captain Goddard M.S.M. is a mid-shore patrol vessel. It is one of nine Hero-class patrol vessels ordered by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans/Canadian Coast Guard, in September 2009. Each of the nine Hero-class patrol vessels will be named for personnel from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP Officers), Canadian Coast Guard (sailors, aircrew), Department of Fisheries and Oceans (fisheries officers) and Canadian Forces (soldiers, sailors, and aircrew) who are credited with performing exceptional or heroic acts during their service.

CCGS Captain Goddard M.S.M. is named in honour of Captain Nichola Kathleen Sarah Goddard, M.S.M., the first Canadian female combat soldier killed in Canadian operations in Afghanistan. Captain Goddard was born in May 1980 to Canadian and British parents in Papua New Guinea, and lived in various locations across Canada. Captain Goddard was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her exemplary service in Afghanistan from January 2006 until her death on May 17 2006 during the Battle of Bayanzi, a small village on the outskirts of Kandahar City. Acting upon reports that the Taliban would be making a large-scale attack on Kandahar City itself, Canadian and Afghan National Army troops deployed to the Bayanzi area to counter fighters massing in the village. As the only Forward Observation Officer, Captain Goddard performed with distinction throughout that day, calling in artillery fire and support from the US Apache helicopters overhead. Shortly after sunset, the Canadian troops moved into Bayanzi. As the Canadian troops started to turn around in the narrow Bayanzi lanes, two rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) struck Captain Goddard's LAV.

"SHANNON" - "CHESAPEAKE"

Confidence in the British navy faltered early in the War of
1812 when American vessels won several single-ship engage-
ments. This pattern was broken on June 1, 1813 when HMS
SHANNON, commanded by Captain Philip Broke, closed with
USS CHESAPEAKE under Captain James Lawrence off Boston
harbour. The latter was taken in a short and bloody fight and
brought into Halifax by her captor on June 6. This engagement
was lond considered a naval classic. It marked a change in
British fortunes in the war at sea and vindicted Broke's insis-
tence on gunnery training, neglected by the navy since Trafalgar.
