HALIFAX ARMOURY
LE MANEGE MILITAIRE D'HALIFAX

The federal government built this impressive drill hall between
1895 and 1899 as part of the reform and expansion of the
Active Militia. Planned as a fully-equipped training centre, it
was substantially larger than most earlier drill halls and boasted
such novel features as an indoor shooting gallery and lecture
rooms. The robust style, suggestive of the medieval fortress,
shows the influence of Chief Architect Thomas Fuller. Its bold
imagery and sophisticated plan perfectly captured the spirit of
militia reform and influenced Canadian drill hall design for
several decades.

The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) was organized in 1883 to train the Canadian militia. It served the British Army garrison in Halifax during the 19th century to defend the city and naval dockyard from land and sea attack.

Wellington Barracks included officers quarters and soldiers quarters. Both structures were damaged during the 1917 Halifax Explosion, with the officers quarters requiring extensive repairs. The RCR Gate was the original entrance to the quarters.

The Wellington Barracks property was turned over to the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and commissioned HMCS Stadacona. A regimental banner and cap badge are over the gates, and the emblazoned battle honours of the Regiment on the stone Gate posts. The regimental cypher decorates two pedestrian doors flanking the main gate.

THE WOMEN'S ROYAL CANADIAN NAVAL SERVICE (WRCNS)
LE SERVICE FÉMININ DE LA MARINE ROYALE DU CANADA

Women's service in the military during the Second World War
challenged the tradition of all-male armed forces. Between 1942
and 1946 close to 7,000 volunteers enlisted in the WRCNS and
served in 26 non-combatant occupations on Canadian naval bases at
home or abroad. By late 1943, nearly 1,000 "Wrens" worked in the
Halifax area and lived in HMCS STADACONA, within sight of this
spot. The WRCNS made an outstanding contribution to Allied
victory, paved the way for future generations of Canadian service
women and raised questions about the equality of women in the
civilian world.
