NORTH WEST REBELLION
BATTLEFORD
L'INSURRECTION DU NORD-OUEST

Between 28 March and 24 April 1885 almost 600 people- most of the
white and Métis population of the area- took refuge in the North-West
Mounted Police post here in anticipation of a general Indian uprising in
support of Riel. Although the fort was never attacked, there was some
looting of the townsite until the post was relieved by the arrival of Lt.
Col. W.D. Otter's troops. Following the defeat of Riel at Batoche the
Cree and Assiniboine bands led by Poundmaker surrendered to
General Middleton here on 26 May 1885.

1885.

The Sergeant Harry Beet Plaque was erected was erected by the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation, Government of Saskatchewan in 1995. Harry, who was awarded the Victoria Cross during the South African War, homesteaded near this location.

Near noon on April 22, 1900, just outside the town of Wakkerstoom, South Africa, a company of British Army mounted infantry was engaged in combat with opposing forces. As the British retreated, one of their soldiers was shot and seriously wounded. Corporal Harry Beet went back and dragged his wounded comrade to cover, where he tended to the soldier's injuries, and provided protection of their position until darkness fell and they were rescued by members of their regiment. As a result of his actions Corporal Beet was promoted to Sergeant, and the Duke of York presented him with the Victoria Cross in 1901.
