The Morewood Cenotaph Committee honored their fallen on the 100th anniversary of the original unveiling of the cenotaph - July 6, 2021, by installing 21 mini-monuments - ten along each side - one for each of those who had given their lives, and one by itself at the back representing all who returned. A portrait of Ernest John Glasgow is etched into his memorial. He stood 5 foot 8 ½ inches.

Ernest was a Farmer before the war and an active member of the 59th Stormont and Glengarry Regiment. He departed on 25 October 1916 and was “On Command Overseas” from 11 to 21 July 1917. He took a temporary demotion to Lieutenant to proceed overseas on 11 August 1917. For New Year's 1918, he sent a post card with a 1918 calendar and a photograph of him in uniform in front of a fireplace. Ernest received a shrapnel wound that penetrated his abdomen on 9 May 1918 and he died from the wounds the same day.

Nelson was a labourer before the war and stood 5 foot 9 inches, had dark hair and brown eyes. His name was anglicized from Narcisse Gregoire. Captain Glasgow witnessed his will on 10 October 1916 and Nelson sailed from Halifax on board the RMS Mauritania on 25 October 1916. On 4 May 1917, he received multiple wounds to his face and arms, was hospitalized in Halifax and discharged on 24 July 1917. He was hospitalized again 31 July 1917 for an old shrapnel wound in his shoulder and discharged 29 September 1917. Nelson was killed in action on 29 March 1918.

A portrait of Emmerson Swerdfeger is etched into his memorial. He stood 5 foot four and three quarter inches, had dark hair, dark eyes and three depressed circular scars in the lower part of his back.

Emmerson was a livery assistant before the war. A medical document dated 28 November 1916 stated the military believed him to be under age. He sailed from Halifax on the SS Mauretania on 25 October 1916 and arrived in England on 31 October. His will was witnessed by Captain Glasgow. Emmerson had shrapnel wounds to his left arm on 6 April 1918 and with shrapnel was hospitalized for scabies from 9 to 20 April 1918. He was reported as killed in action on 8 August 1918.

A letter sent to his parents was shared with the Chesterville Record:

“A young man who had trained with him in England and in France was only two feet from him when he fell. The chum was severely wounded at the same time.”

The family added “Had Emerson lived two days more he would have reached the age of 19 years.” This provided his actual birth date.

The 20 pillars representing individual soldiers are in alphabetic order. The 21st pillar sits in the shadow of the cenotaph and between the two rows. A shadow stone, not only because of where it is physically located, but also because of where it resides in our thoughts on Remembrance Day and recognition of their sacrifice. They survived the battlefield to return home changed, wounded, damaged in visible and invisible ways and they would eventually succumb to these wounds. They sacrificed their lives just as much as those who fell alongside them on the battlefield, it just took longer.

This single pillar represents so many Canadians whose sacrifices aren’t recorded in the Books of Remembrance and only appear in the shadows of our thoughts when attending Remembrance Day ceremonies. The pillar recognizes the sacrifices of those who survived the battlefield, but who would perish as a direct result of their combat environment, whether from an illness like tuberculosis or the Spanish flu, or through physical or mental injuries.

The war memorial in Dixon's Corners is located in front of the Matilda Community Hall. The monument commemorates local residents who served in the First and Second World Wars and was first dedicated in 1984. But over the past 36 years, its condition has deteriorated and is dire need of refurbishment. The full project is estimated to cost $60,000 and includes refurbishment of the original monument and bronze plaques from 1984, new walkways from the main entrance of the Matilda Hall over to the site, an elevated platform to display the cenotaph and monument, lighting, landscaping, a new flag pole, and other beautification items. Construction on the memorial began summer 2019. The project was complete and a dedication ceremony held before 2019’s Remembrance Day. The rededication ceremony was held Sunday Oct 27, 2019.

The $60K revamp of Matilda Cenotaph was done by mid-October after a $25K federal grant received from Veterans Affairs Canada through the Commemorative Partnership Program. The revamp was funded by the Legion, the Iroquois-Matilda Lions Club, and other people working on the project including Conservative Party candidate Eric Duncan. Their pitch to township council in Feb 19 2018 asked for South Dundas to contribute money towards the project. The proponents asked the township for $4,000 to replace the current asphalt walkway that leads from the parking lot to the entrance of Matilda Hall, where the memorial is located, with a walkway made of interlocking stone. The project also received major financial support of $10,000 from the South Branch Community Fund this spring. The Committee also accepted charitable donations and sold walkway bricks for $150 (income tax receipts provided).

On Sunday, October 27, the Matilda Monument and Cenotaph was rededicated. The colour guard of the Iroquois Legion, and the Kemptville Pipe Band leading the procession, politicians, dignitaries, service groups, families, friends and those who just wanted to pay their respects to the fallen, gathered outside Matilda Hall in Dixon’s Corners.

The new memorial, designed by Kevin Allen of Eastern Ontario Cemetery Memorials and Keith Ardron of Ardron Landscapes, cost $60,000, the funds raised through Veterans Affairs and the generosity of municipal and provincial governments, private donors and the sale of Memorial Bricks. Re-furbishing this memorial was something that Eric Duncan, several of whose family members served in World War II, had been interested in doing for some time.

One of the memorial bricks simply says “Thank you for the gifts: choice and freedom.”
