In May 2016, Roz Green found two large, wooden panels laying curbside in her central Toronto neighborhood. She thought her boyfriend, who was in the course of decorating his apartment, might find them useful and took them home.

The following day she researched some of the names on the panels, which led her to the Sarnia Historical Society’s website. Roz contacted Society President Ron Reale Smith who suspected the panels, which were First World War Honor Rolls listing the names of local men who served or died in conflict, might be from a Sarnia church or military club. She quickly turned the panels over to the historical society and Ron drove them home to Sarnia from Toronto. Local historian Randy Evans then tried to determine how something honouring dozens of Sarnia Veterans wound up on a Toronto trash heap.

The Honor Rolls are believed to have originally come from Parker Street Methodist Church in Sarnia and are now in the care of Sarnia’s First Hussars on display in the George Sitrett Armoury.

In early July 1944, the minister and congregation at Blackwell United Church honoured Private Core at a Sunday morning memorial service. During the service, an honour roll bearing the names of fourteen men who had enlisted in the Second World War from the Blackwell congregation and community was unveiled and dedicated. The unveiling ceremony was performed by Private James Somes, Royal Canadian Artillery and the prayer of dedication was pronounced by the Rev. P.S. Banes, of Point Edward.

When Blackwell United Church closed in 2014, the Honour Roll was moved to Sarnia Legion Branch No. 62.

This Honour Roll pays tribute to the Sarnia First Nation men and women who were served in the Second World War.

Three honour rolls located within St. Clair United Church pay tribute to local Aamjiwnaang First Nation who served during the two World Wars. One honours those who served in the First World War and the other two (one which was completed before the end of the war) honour those who served in the Second World War.

Copies of the honour rolls were framed and placed in the Aamjiwnaang First Nation office around 2015.
