In early February of 1944, an honour roll in the St. Clair United Church was unveiled. It pays tribute to the Sarnia First Nation men and women who were serving in the Second World War. It was unveiled under flags of Canada and the United States as First Nation people were serving in both militaries. Edwin Maness, the oldest Veteran of the First World War of Aamjiwnaang First Nation, unveiled the honour roll with 25 names.

Three honour rolls located within St. Clair United Church pay tribute to local Aamjiwnaang First Nations who served during the two World Wars. One honours those who served in the First World War and the other two (one which was completed before the end of the war) honour those who served in the Second World War.

Copies of the honour rolls were framed and placed in the Aamjiwnaang First Nation office around 2015.

The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire was formed in 1900 in Fredericton, New Brunswick to promote patriotism, loyalty and service to others. Chapters were formed in quick succession across Canada. In 1915, the Pro Patria Chapter and St. Clair Chapter were formed in Sarnia. This patriotic women's charitable organization has funded food, clothing and medical supplies for troops and prisoners of war; donated relief supplies for victims of war; built and run hospitals; raised money for ambulances, hospital ships, a Bolingbrok bomber and a fighter aircraft; established libraries, canteens and accommodations for servicemen; and "adopted" ships. In Sarnia, the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire adopted HMCS Mahone, a Royal Canadian Navy Banger-class minesweeper with a crew of eighty-three. In peacetime, Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire members volunteer with and for people, focusing on children, education and community services working to improve the quality of life for those in need.

The plaque honouring those who died in the First World War was donated in 1928 by the Sarnia Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire. The plaque was first located in the foyer of the Carnegie Library, which stood until 1961, near the location where the memorial now sits.

In November 2019, the plaque was cleaned and restored as part of a Sarnia Historical Society and Sarnia Royal Canadian Legion project.

Sarnia’s “Calamity” tank has served as a tribute to the fighting soldiers of the First Hussars. The tank was donated to the City of Sarnia by the First Hussars and Sarnia Legion in 1970. The tank is model type M4A2 HVSS Sherman medium tank with a 76-mm gun, serial number 65042, built by Fisher, with Reg. No. 30123021. Sherman tanks were manned by a five-man crew that included the commander, gunner, loader/wireless operator, driver, and co-driver/machine-gunner.

The tank was christened “Calamity” to honour First Hussars member Brandon (Brandy) Conron, who drove a tank named “Calamity” as the Canadians stormed ashore on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

Sarnia’s Sherman “Calamity” tank’s dedication plaque is inscribed: To the Memory of Our Fallen Comrades. Dedicated by the 1st Hussars and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62. 8 November, 1970. ‘Lest We Forget’.

In 1994, a second plaque was unveiled on the Sherman tank. This second plaque is inscribed: 1944-1994 This plaque is placed here to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Allied Invasion of Normandy on D-Day, 6th June 1944. It is dedicated to the soldiers of the First Hussars; to those who took part in the assault, to those who fought in the European Campaign, and to those who gave their lives to liberate France, Belgium, and Holland. “Hodie Non Cras”.
