LOG CABIN - ROYAL ENGINEERS
circa 1860
This Log Cabin is the only remaining building of many built in 1860
and 1861 by Sappers of the Royal Engineers to provide accommodation
during the clearing of the 49th parallel to mark the border between
British Columnbia and the United States.
This Cabin was originally located in Langley, British Columbia, near
the 49th parallel, was moved to Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack
in 1986, and to the present site in the year 2000 by Six Field Engineer
Squadron with financial assistance from a "Community Spirit Grant" from
the Province of British Columbia, through "British Columbia 2000".
The Log Cabin was formally opened in its present location, on
Saturday 16th of September 2000, by Colonel Anthony F. George, TD.,
Joint Honorary Colonel of our sister Regiment, The Royal Monmouthshire
Royal Engineers (Militia) located in the United Kingdom
2000
This 1860 Royal Engineer Log Building was moved from its location at CFB Chilliwack to a site adjacent to the Six Field Engineer Squadron Museum Association's Armoury. This was completed in 2000. It was reconstructed by 6 Field Squadron after the closure of CFB Chilliwack. This log building was originally built by the Royal Engineers in 1860 to provide accommodation for their survey team that was surveying the 49th parallel between Canada and the United States. It was located close to the 49th parallel near the present town of Langley. This building is believed to be the only remaining building of those built in 1860 and 1861 by the Royal Engineers as accommodation during the clearing and survey of the 49th Parallel to mark of the border between British Columbia and the United States. The log cabin was formally opened in its present location on 16 September 2000 by Col. A.F. George, TD, Joint Honorary Colonel of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia), an affiliated regiment in United Kingdom.

ORDER OF CANADA – MAY 9, 2003
In May 1986 the Sailor's Memorial was constructed in memory of The Men and Women of the Royal Canadian Navy, The Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserves, The Royal Canadian Navy Reserves, Women's Royal Naval Service, and the Merchant Navy. The sailors Memorial was built by the Vancouver Naval Veterans Association. Designed by Thomas Osbourne of the V.N.V.A. The land located at the Waterfront Park was made available by the Mayor, J. E. Loucks, and the Vancouver City Council. The major construction was done by North Vancouver City. All plaques and bands were done in porcelain, by members of the VNVA. The monument is a Compass Rose Sundial. At each Cardinal Point is a plaque mounted appropriately on a large stone. One to the Royal Canadian Navy, one to the Merchant Navy, one to Captain George Vancouver, who named Burrad Inlet, and one to the Citizens of North Vancouver. At the bottom and surrounding the Compass is a porcelain band, with line drawings of each Canadian ship which were lost during the second World War (1939 - 45). On the north side are the words, "At the going down of the Sun and in the Morning we will remember them". On the South side of the monument area, a porcelain plaque contains the names of the men who were lost. Under the plaque on the south wall, in large bronze letters is the name SAILORS POINT. On the North side of the monument area stand four flags, the Canadian Flag, the Navy White Ensign, the Canadian Red Maritime Ensign, and the British Columbia Flag. Under the flags is a floral anchor.

PEACEKEEPING
The North Vancouver Cenotaph, located in Victoria Park, was constructed in 1923 in memory of the citizens of the City and the District of North Vancouver who gave their lives during the First World War. The monument was later rededicated to commemorate the fallen of the Boer War, the Second World War, the Korean War and various peacekeeping missions around the world. The Cenotaph was designed by Blackadder and MacKay, Architects, and erected by the British Columbia Monumental Works of Vancouver. (Henry Blackadder was a resident of North Vancouver and served during the First World War.) The 1995 Cenotaph Enhancement Project upgraded the surrounding area of Victoria Park with new memorial markers, a commemorative lawn, extended walkways, lighting, a drinking fountain, floral plantings and additional benches.
