Remembering the 1998 Ice Storm
When natural disaster strikes, Canada’s military can come to the rescue. Twenty-five years ago, they did just that.
A storm of a lifetime
In early January 1998, a prolonged period of ice pellets and freezing rain struck parts of Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick. The storm, and the cold temperatures that followed, caused massive damage, leaving millions of Canadians without power in the middle of winter.
In response, more than 15,000 Canadian Armed Forces members deployed across the affected areas. Their effort and determination were invaluable to help provide shelter and medical care, restore power grids and contribute to other recovery efforts.
