Born:

April 8, 1888

Son of John and Ellen Thompson of Kenora, Ontario. For 80 years, his grave was unlike most others - his tombstone had read simply "Unknown Sergeant." A Memorial service for Sergeant G. R. Thompson was held on November 9, 1998, as part of the Pilgrimage to mark the 80th Anniversary of the end of the First World War. His final resting place in Crest Cemetery -- next to 77 of his comrades-- is peaceful, overlooking the pastoral French farmlands.

Commemorated on Page 512 of the First World War Book of Remembrance. Request a copy of this page.
