Location:

The BENGHAZI WAR CEMETERY is about 7 kilometres south-east of Benghazi. To reach it take the main western road as far as the Ring road. The cemetery is about 1 kilometre along this road on the right-hand side.

  • Letter– Carbon copy, received by RCAF Overseas Headquarters, of a letter sent in 1947 to the Imperial [now Commonwealth] War Graves Commission by the officer commanding No. 5 Missing Research & Enquiry Unit.  It sets out the known circumstances of WO2 Rebstock's death and initial burial in an enemy cemetery.

  • Photo of John Rebstock– John was born in Crystal Beach, Ontario on March 19, 1919.  He attended primary and secondary schools in Ridgeway Ontario.  He was an avid participant in sports, especially soccer and hockey.  In 1940, John enlisted in the RCAF.  He progressed through training and received his Wings, on August 20, 1941 in Dunnville Ontario.  On September 14, 1941 he sailed from Halifax, to the UK aboard the Empress of Asia.  John was assigned to RAF Spitfire Squadron 134 in Northern Ireland.  In March 1942, he was transferred to RAF Hurricane Squadron 213 in North Africa.  On November 18, 1942 his aircraft was downed by ground fire and he died on the way to hospital.  He is fondly remembered by his brothers and sisters; George, Norman(Bud), Louise, Ruth, JoAnne. and their extended families.
