Location:

Durnbach is a village 16 kilometres east of Bad Tolz, a town 48 kilometres south of Munich. Durnbach War Cemetery is 3 kilometres north of the village Gmund am Tegernsee. Using the A8 from Munich, turn off at the junction Holzkirchen, taking the 318 road in the direction of Gmund am Tegernsee. At the crossroads with the 472, turn left in the direction of Miesbach. The cemetery is situated approximately 500 metres on the left from the 318/472 crossroads.

On the night of 24 April 1944, Lancaster ND 876 was airborne at 2053 from its home base Skellingthorpe on an operation to Munich and joined a force of 234 Lancasters and 16 Mosquitos of No. 5 Group and 10 Lancasters of No. 1 Group.   ND 876 was hit by Flak over the target, breaking in two sections and falling at Munchen-Laim 0154 on the 25th.   The raid was accurate and successful, but nine Lancasters were lost.  [ND876 was delivered to 50 Squadron 8Apr44. When lost it had a total of 26 hours.]

P/O Brock and 23-year old F/S (AG) Joseph N. G. R. Casaubon, from Cardinal, Ont. , were the only Canadians on the crew.  They are buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery along with the five RAF members.  They are:

F/O (P) Lennox Durham, DFC, RAF, age 24, from Australia
Sgt. (FE) Francis P. Brown
F.S (N) Eric S. Jones, age 21, from Cambridge
F/S (WAG) Dennis L. Reynolds, age 21, from Cheshire
F/S (AG) Norman Jackson, age 19, from Yorkshire
  • Citation– DFC citation London Gazette 21 Dec. 45 and AFRO 155/46 dated 15 February 1946.
