Son of William Bell and Rachel Esselmont Florence, of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Brother of William Bell, service number H-6336, Winnipeg Grenadiers, also made prisoner of war in Hong Kong; he survived the war.

Gordon served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers – NPAM – from 1935 to 1936 in Manitoba, then in the reserves from 13 December 1939 to 3 January 1940, when he joined the regular forces to serve in Bermuda with Force B, in Jamaica with Force Y, in Hong Kong with Force C, in Japan as prisoner of war. He had 2,094 days of service, including 1,318 overseas.

To commemorate his sacrifice, the Government of Manitoba named Bell Peninsula, on Lake Semmens, in his honour in 1995.

Location:

YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY is 9 kilometres west of the city on Yuenchi-Dori, Hodogaya Ward, which branches left off the old Tokkaido highway. The nearest railway station is Hodogaya, 5 kilometres to the north on the JNR line but the cemetery is easily reached by bus from Yokohama station.
