Additional information
Son of Walter William Patterson and Mae Laura Middleton, of Sussex, New Brunswick. Four of his brothers served during the Second World War: Roy Middleton Patterson, Lloyd George Patterson, Guy Elwood Patterson and Earl Patterson; they survived the war.

He first served with the 1st Mortars, 2nd Battalion, New Brunswick Rangers - NPAM – service number G-428118, from 9 October 1940 to 7 November 1940, before transferring to the 1st Battalion, Royal Rifles of Canada and was sent in New Brunswick, in Newfoundland with Force W, in Québec, in Hong Kong with Force C. He had 711 days of service, including 361 overseas.
