Son of William Charles Cayley and Phoebe Evelyn Coon, of Stratford. Husband of Florence Joscelyne Lomas, of Oshawa. Father of Jocelyn Ann and Marion Grace Cayley.

He served in France during the First World War with the 13th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, service number 126373. He was wounded in action on June 6, 1916.

During the Second World War, he served only in Canada for 1,330 days.
