Son of Oswald Michael Joseph Campbell and Anne Bridget Goodwin. Oswald was a Veteran of the First World War, service number 4764, he fought in France with the 3rd Depot Unit of Supply and he survived the war. He also previously served for 13 months with the 18th Company, Canadian Army Service Corps Training Depot in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Richard is the brother of Oswald W. Campbell, service number R-174029, Royal Canadian Air Force, who served overseas during the Second World War and survived the war.

Richard served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Montreal Regiment – NPAM – in Montréal, Québec, from 23 October 1941 to 28 October 1942 before transferring to the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada and England. He had 757 days of service, including 335 overseas.
