  • Steeple Morden Memorial– Sgt 755267 Edward Graham Buckingham RAFVR KIA 8th June 1941 on a training orientation exercise from 11 OTU RAF Steeple Morden in Wellington R1728. On Sunday 8th of June 1941 Wellington R1728 from No.11 Operational Training Unit took off from RAF Station Steeple Morden, Cambridgeshire (No.6 Group) at 15.10 hours (Double Summer Time) on a Navigational Exercise. The route being Base-Helmsley- 54.15N, 01.45E-53.20N 02.00E-Manby-Wainfleet Sands to Cranwell and back to base; E.T.A. 20.10 hours… Nothing was heard from Wellington R1728 after take-off and it was reported missing.
On Saturday 21st June 1941 the Royal Navy Liaison Officer at Humber was advised a dinghy containing the bodies of two airmen had been recovered by a High Speed Rescue Launch at position 51.13 and 01.31E. It is important to note another crew where on a similar navigation route that afternoon and on return reported ‘clear weather on route’ however a report was written on Tuesday 17th June about the missing aircraft and that paragraph 2 of Report Bas/1215/144/P1 reads' ‘It is reasonable to assume that such a loss was caused by enemy action.’
Wellington Ic R1728 was one of 550 aircraft built by Vickers, Chester under Contract No. 992424/39 being delivered from August 1940 and completed in May 1941. R1728 was delivered to No.11 O.T.U.
