Location:

CASSINO WAR CEMETERY lies in the Commune of Cassino, Province of Frosinone, 139 kilometres south-east of Rome. It is situated in the valley of the River Liri immediately below the southern spurs of the central Apennines. Above it at a distance of one kilometre is the dominating hill on which stands the Abbey of Monte Cassino, founded by St. Benedict in the year 529 on the site of an ancient temple of Apollo. If approaching the CASSINO WAR CEMETERY by road, follow the Highway A2 from Rome to Naples and leave it at the Cassino exit. After passing the pay booths, follow the sign for Cassino. At the traffic lights, after a block of flats, turn right towards the locality of S. Angelo and the CWGC signs will then be seen.

  • Photo of Basil Halhed– Halhed, Basil Maurice - Lance-Corporal. Born 10th March, 1920, at Chemainus, B.C. Educated at Chemainus Elementary School and Ladysmith High School. Entered the service of the Bank 30th March, 1937. Served at Ladysmith and Nanaimo, B.C. Enlisted 12th September, 1939, from the latter branch in The Canadian Scottish Regiment. Stationed at Prince Rupert, B.C., and Debert, N.S. Overseas in September, 1941. Promoted Corporal. Reverted to Private on transfer to The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada in January, 1943. Later Lance-Corporal. Landed in Sicily in June, 1943, with the first Canadian contingent in that theatre of war, and saw continuous action in Sicilian and Italian campaigns. Killed in action 23rd May, 1944, in the battle of the Liri Valley. His Company Commander wrote: "Basil was a splendid soldier, and in his last battle was well past the objective when he fell." From a memorial booklet prepared by the Canadian Bank of Commerce.
