Son of Maurice and Margaret O'Brien, of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

Brother of Able Seaman Michael Francis O'Brien, who died while serving with the Merchant Navy. Brother of David who served with the Royal Navy Auxiliary and accidently drowned on September 28, 1942, in St. John's Harbour when his ship was in port. His brother Denis served in the Royal Navy and returned home safely. His brother John briefly enlisted with the Royal Navy, then joined the Newfoundland Militia and served until April 30, 1941.
