  • Photo of Frederick William Turner– Letter from Sgt Harry Ross to Frederick's mother, Sarah, reads as follows..

"France Sept 4 1918
Dear Friend: Just a line to you along with poor Fred's personal kit, I am sorry to have kept you waiting this long but I wanted to make sure there was no more. Well Mrs. Turner I have just finished writing to one of the boy's wives, he was killed the same time as Freddie and my goodness its an awful job its the first time I have ever done it and sincerely hope it is the last but I promised the boys I would do it as I missed the battle by going on leave so I must stick to my promise. I will have to close for this time assuring you , you have both mine and the platoon's deepest sympathy.
As Ever Sgt Harry Ross no. 105111."
