Location:

Hippolytushoef, a village in the commune of Wieringen, is 18 kilometres east-south-east of Den Helder, and 46 kilometres north-north-east of Alkmaar. The WIERINGEN (HIPPOLYTUSHOEF) GENERAL CEMETERY is on the northern outskirts of the village, about 100 metres west of the road to Oever. The graves are In the north-eastern corner.

  • Photo of James Craigie– Craigie, James Edgar Donald - Flying Officer. Born 8th May, 1918, at Toronto. Educated at Fern Avenue Public School and Parkdale Collegiate Institute, Toronto. Entered the service of the Bank 1st March, 1937. Served at Toronto city branches. Enlisted 31st May, 1941, from West Toronto in R.C.A.F. Sergeant Observer 3rd June, 1942; Pilot Officer 23rd March, 1943; Flying Officer in April, 1943. Trained at St. Hubert, Que., Malton and Jarvis, Ont., and Rivers, Man. Overseas in October, 1942. Attached R.A.F.  Served with Lancaster Squadron commanded b7 Wing Commander Guy Gibson, V.C.,
and took part in at least 15 raids.  Killed in action 26th June, 1943, after an air attack on Gelsenkirchen, when his aircraft was shot down north of Wieringen by anti-aircraft fire and the entire crew lost their lives. His body was recovered and buried in Zandburen Cemetery, in the Community of Wieringen, 2nd July, 1943. From a memorial booklet prepared by the Canadian Bank of Commerce.
