Son of Réginald James La Couvée and Maria Julia Potvin of Vancouver, British Columbia. Réginald was conscripted into the Canadian Army and enlisted on 22 July 1918, in Québec City, regimental number 3383467, with the 2nd Québec Regiment. He was demobilized without taking part in the conflict on 19 August 1918.
Brother of Privates Robert Alfred Rodolphe and Maurice Emuriel Wilbert La Couvée, who fought in Europe during the Second World War, and of merchant seaman Rémy Graydon Gilbert La Couvée. They survived the war.
On 3 December 1944, at 1000 hours, the Cornwallis had just left New York harbour, USA, and was sailing unescorted when she was torpedoed by U-1230 10 miles (16 km) off the US coast in the Gulf of Maine, position 43°59'N/68°20'W. The attack took the lives of the captain, 35 sailors and seven gunners.
