Son of Thomas Green Orton and Louisa Annie Taylor of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Brother of W.H. Orton, Darmouth, Nova Scotia.

On 28 January 1940, the Eston was away from convoy FN-81 when she hit a mine laid on 20 December 1939 by U-22 off Blyth, England, in the North Sea. The Eston sank with her captain and 17 crew members, position 55°03'N/01°24'W.
