Location:

The town of Nijmegen is 16 km south of Arnhem. JONKERBOS WAR CEMETERY is 4 km south west of Nijmegen, 1 km south of the main Grave-Nijmegen road. Folowing the A73 exit at the junction Nijmegen Wijchen taking following directions to Nijmegen along the A32b entering Nijmegen on the Graafseweg. On reaching the Industrieterrein a Commission signpost directs visitors to turn left onto the Weg Door Jonkerbos. Shortly after appears a further signpost showing the left hand turning onto Oude Mollenhutseweg. The JONKERBOS WAR CEMETERY is located on 150 metres after entering the Oude Mollenhutseweg on the right hand side of the road.

  • Grave Marker– Photo courtesy of Frans van Cappellen, Putten, The Netherlands. P/O Witt, age 20, had completed one tour and was had begun his second tour of operations when he lost his life. Halifax aircraft HR-905 which was airborne 2315 13Jul43 from Gransden Lodge. Shot down by a night-fighter and disintegrated near Asten (Noord Brabant), 9 km SE of Helmond, Holland. Burials were held at the temporary military cemetery at Venlo. Their graves are now located in Jonkerbos War Cemetery. S/L D. L. Wolfe, DFC, joined the RAF prior to the outbreak of war. He had been a flight commander with 419 Sqdn and was on his second tour of operations. Sgt Bebensee RCAF had previously served on No.35 Sqdn, his DFM being Gazetted 11Jun43. That for F/S Emerson was Gazetted 28Jul44. Sgt D.G.Bebensee DFM RCAF KIA F/O R.G.Morrison DFC; Sgt E.M.Witt; F/O G.G.McGladrey DFC; F/S T.H.N.Emerson DFM. Two crew were taken PoW: F/O D.M.Clarke, RCAF, was interned in Camp L3. No.6474 with F/O D.J.Smith, RNZAF, PoW No.6291. (Source: //lostbombers.co.uk)
