F/O Eldred Mercer, age 24, was killed on February 19, 1943, while, taking off from 137 Squadron base at Manston, Kent, England. F/O Mercer's Whirlwind-P7114 collided with another aircraft which was taxiing along the same runway.

Whilst taking off in Whirlwind P7119 at night from RAF Manston he collided with 2nd Lt. Freeman in Whirlwind P7114. Both pilots died when the bombs blew up.
