Son of Edward and Rose Alice Louise Bernst (1985 National Memorial (Silver) Cross Mother), of Murillo, Ontario.

His brother Ronald William Bernst died November 24, 1944 while serving with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve.

Six brothers served in the Second World War or in Korea; their father also served in the Second World War with the Canadian Forestry Corps.
