Son of John L. and Harriet McIntyre. The eldest of three children, he had a brother, William, who would also serve in the RCAF, and a sister, Calla. When Jack was one year old, he and his family moved to Biggar, Saskatchewan, where his father was a conductor with the CNR. Jack attended public and high schools there. His favourite pastimes included hockey, curling, tennis, and especially skating. He was also musical, playing the piano and the trombone (with Biggar's Kinsmen Club Band). After completing high school in 1939, Jack worked for a few months at the local Safeway Store. He then travelled to Saskatoon to attend the Normal School, receiving his Teachers' Certificate, 1st class, in 1941. At the same time, he was a cadet with the Saskatoon Light Infantry, and completed a cadet instructors course.
Jack enlisted in the RCAF. He had hoped to become a pilot and follow in his father's wartime footsteps. Jack, Sr., had been a pilot in the First World War. However, after disembarking in the U.K. in September 1943, Jack, Jr., became a wireless air gunner. He was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre l940 with Palm (Belgium) in July 1948.

GERAARDSBERGEN (GRAMMONT) COMMUNAL CEMETERY Belgium
The town of Geraardsbergen is located south of the town of Aalst on the N42. From the motorway E40/A10, which runs between Oostende and Brussels, turn off at junction 17 onto the N42, direction Geraardsbergen. Follow this road to the town of Geraardsbergen and the junction with the N493. Turn right onto the N493, direction Parike, and the cemetery is along here on the right. The graves are located towards the centre of the cemetery.
