Son of Joseph Grove Smith, and of Amy (nee Wright) Smith, of Ottawa, Ontario. Brother of Flying Officer Leonard Ian Smith, 115 RAF Squadron, lost his life on 6 October 1942, Lieutenant David Smith, Leading Aircraftman Alan Smith,Peter, Kathleen, Doreen, Dorothy and Barbara.

1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Posthumously awarded RCAF Operational Wings in recognition of gallant service in action against the enemy, the 29 May 1946.
