Son of Anthony and Mary McPhee, of Sydney, Nova Scotia. His brother John Joseph McPhee served with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve and he died on January 15, 1946.

Sgt. Stephen McPhee, age 33, one of the older former Sydney Academy students to make the supreme sacrifice in the Second World War, was killed at 1654 Operational Training Unit, when he was in collision with a motor van, two miles south of Stamford, Lincolnshire. Sgt. MacPhee is buried in the All-Saints Churchyard, Wittering, Northamptonshire, England.
