Baptized Thomas-Joseph-Zéphirin Gagné. Son of Zéphirin Gagné (deceased in 1902) and Elizabeth Osborn. He stated being born in 1898 when he enlisted and he named his sister Alberta « Bertha » (wife of Edward Gilmet), of Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, as next of kin.

Enlisted in the 150th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on September 23, 1916, he sailed for Great Britain and landed in Liverpool, England, on October 6. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on February 22, 1918, he set foot in France on the 23rd and went to the front line on the 27th. He was killed in action on May 25, 1918, east of Boisleux-Saint-Marc, Pas-de-Calais, in Mercatel, while in a shelter with a comrade. A heavy shell exploded, destroying the shelter and killing them instantly.

Wailly is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais about 6 kilometres south-west from Arras in the valley of the little river Crinchon. WAILLY ORCHARD CEMETERY stands above the village on its outskirts in part of the old orchard.
